MANCHESTER — At first glance, the empty desk, bare cinder block walls, and three plastic chairs give the new headquarters for Uni-Star Cleaning Service a vacant look, but looks can be deceiving.

Between a string of new hires, a growing fleet of vehicles, and new digs, Ryan Van Orden is living the dream.

In fact, this Manchester native and owner of Uni-Star Cleaning Service says he's taking his business to the next level.

He explains that cleaning is a competitive industry because of the low barrier of entry.

You don't need an office, you don't need a lot of equipment, and you don't even need employees. This is a business that one person can start on their own with very little up front cost and that's where most cleaners stop.

They rode into town like the Four Horsemen, but instead of death and destruction, Jeremy Hitchcock, Chris Reinhardt, Tom Daly, and Tim Wilde came to Manchester to resurrect the Queen City's fading glory.

How's that for a little hyperbole?

It may sound like a stretch when you look at today's Manchester, but when you take a minute to remember what Manchester was like in 2001, you could make an argument that whether they knew it or not, these men were destined to bring a change of an almost biblical proportion to our tired old city.

In 2001 we were less than a year removed from the Y2K panic, cell phones were expensive toys for people with more money than sense, and the country was in the middle of a recession. Read full post »

Have you ever had one of those days when you wished you had a little extra help around the office? Maybe you had two clients with competing deadlines, or maybe you just needed an extra pair of hands to do the things you're not-so-good at so you could focus on doing the tasks that make you money. I'm here to tell you you're not alone.

The number one reason small businesses fail to thrive is a lack of resources. And it's no surprise to anyone that the three resources most businesses lack are:

  1. time
  2. support
  3. money

What if I told you that Career Connections, a family-run staffing agency in Bedford, New Hampshire can help you overcome the challenges of limited time and support so that you can make more money?

You'd probably think I was crazy.

Love it or hate it, the fact remains the same, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, typically referred to as Obamacare or ACA, has created a lot of headaches for sole proprietors, and with this year's tax penalty for not having ACA-compliant insurance at 2.5% of your household adjusted gross income[1], those headaches have gone from being a gentle throbbing in your temple to an ice pick in your brain.

  • Premiums
  • Out of pocket costs
  • What is covered?
  • What has to be covered to avoid tax penalties?

What do you get when you mix wine, chocolate, ghosts, and toner?

Would you believe a boat load of savings and a whole lot of fun?

Happy New Year everyone! I don't know about you but I am super excited about 2017. I spent the last couple weeks networking and I am on overload at this point. I'm bouncing off the walls and running around like a lunatic and it's driving my husband and everyone else around me a little nuts.

One of the things that got me so excited is that we are kicking off the new year with not one, but two guests on this month's edition of Live from the Hive, Tammy Downing from Out of the Box Tours and Mike Lynch from Inkspot NH.

Not so guilty pleasures...

It may make you feel pampered and decadent, but massage is actually an affordable luxury that should be part of your healthy living plan.

Whether you've got that nagging neck pain or are simply feeling overwhelmed, the healing power of touch can bring a welcome relief to many of today's stresses.

  • pain relief
  • relaxation
  • improved focus & concentration

In a 24/7 world where there is no down time, making a commitment to give yourself a 30 or 60-minute timeout every month is a necessity for anyone who wants to be on top of their game and feel their best.

A warrior's compassion

Leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and critical thinking are the words people use to describe the skills veterans bring when they return to the civilian world, but they're just part of the equation. When you add things like empathy, compassion, and vision you end up with people like Bonnie Roberts, who has combined all of these skills to tackle the very real problem of how to find quality in-home care.

Aging in place is a goal that many seniors share. Residential care is often cost prohibitive and remaining in a home they've most likely already paid for allows people enjoy their golden years surrounded by the memories and routines that give their days a familiar structure.

Unfortunately, it's not always a goal that can be achieved on their own.

We all want to be there for our parents as they get older, but sometimes they require more care and attention than we can give on our own.

Home Helpers of Londonderry provides a variety of in-home care services throughout southern New Hampshire to meet almost every in-home care need.

Day 4 of Veterans Week is taking off with Joe Lopez from Arrow Security & Training LLC. As the largest of the companies I've interviewed for this promotion, what Joe does to support the active duty community of the armed services is invaluable. Quality training prepares the troops for combat, and without that training they spend the first few months of deployment getting used to things they should already know.

It's no longer a matter of if...

Norm Gentry is what I would describe as a calm man who faces challenges with a smile and an enviable amount of patience, so when he came to last month's Coffee Buzz and said "I need you to to get the message out," I took him seriously.

Gentry is an IT guy whose company, SBTI Technologies, provides computer repair/maintenance, system backup, network and resource management, virus recovery and just about every tech service a small business owner needs. He's been in the business since Windows was new and he's tackled pretty much every tech problem a business owner is likely to encounter and lately he's been seeing more and more people coming to him with ransomware problems.
