Sneak Peek: 2017 UPS X-Port Challenge

You don't hear a lot about it, but New Hampshire has a thriving export economy.

According to the NH Office of International Commerce, 2,625 New Hampshire companies export over $4 Billion of goods to 180 countries.  [1]

International markets can be very profitable for local manufacturers, but it takes money to get a product from a factory in the Granite State to a distributor or end user across the globe.  Which is where UPS comes in.

As a global shipping leader, UPS knows first-hand the costs and challenges small business owners face getting their products to international destinations and they've put together a contest called the UPS X-Port Challenge to help you get your products to a global market.

The pitch-off event is Thursday, October 26th from 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM at the Manchester Country Club.

September is all about sales and in this month's episode of Live from the Hive I'm talking to interior decorator Piper Turgeon from Eco Chic Interiors about how to get the best price for your home with a little help from a professional home stager.

Hint: Think de-clutter and clean, then clean again.

Keeping with the sales vibe, I'm also talking to sales expert Brad Solomon from Solomon Strategic Business Development.

Ssshhh....Alpha Loft is Moving!

I'm not sure why this seems like some kind of state secret, but Alpha Loft Manchester is moving to the 2nd floor of 1087 Elm Street on October 1st.

It's kind of weird since it's been in the Union Leader and I've personally confirmed it with the peeps at Alpha Loft, but you will find almost no mention of it anywhere on the web.  (Not even on Alpha Loft's website...)

I wish I could say I'm going to miss the wonky conference room floor of their old space at 844 Elm Street, but I'm not.  It was always a toss up between showing up early for a prime end-of-table spot and risking a parking ticket at the time-sensitive meters or spend an entire meeting trying to keep your chair from rolling on the steeply slanted floor so you didn't break a rib when you hit the conference table.

Taking a Look at Last Year's Featured Veteran-Owned Businesses

Last year I teamed up with Chris Pastrana from the NH Business Show for a Veterans Day project we called "7 Veteran Owned Businesses in 7 Days."

Our plan was to shoot a video and write an article about seven different veteran-owned businesses in New Hampshire then post one article each day of veterans week.

It didn't quite work out that way.

A series of technical setbacks combined with other commitments shortened our time line and made it impossible for us to coordinate schedules.

In the end, we each did five pieces and instead of seven businesses in seven days, we went into Veterans Week featuring ten different veteran-owned businesses.

NH Tech Hub...the things you find once you start looking

Did you know there is a website that aggregates New Hampshire tech news, tech events, tech jobs, and tech resources?

I'm a web developer and I spend hours every week researching local business and tech events and I had no idea.

NH Tech Hub is the pet project of Joshua Cyr, Director of Acceleration and Education at Alpha Loft.  His goal seems to be to bring together the local tech community to share information and resources to build a stronger tech workforce.

Business Isn't Always Fair...

Have you ever met a competitor and wondered how the heck someone like that is succeeding while you struggle?

You know the guy I mean. He's not as smart as you. He doesn't have the same skills or training, and he definitely doesn't have your passion.

How does he find so many clients? He knows how to leverage his network.

  • You don't have to be the best when you are the first person referred.
  • You don't have to be the most skilled when someone says they know you.
  • And you don't have to be the most passionate when someone just needs the job done now.

As long as you have the minimum skills to do your job, all you need to succeed are the right connections.
